PROFILE: Scotty is a charming senior who'll celebrate
his 78th birthday this September. He and Ruth have been married for 37
wonderful years, and share their home with two entertaining Yorkshire Terriers
and an outdoor dog named Red. The good-looking gentleman gets around in a power
chair, enjoys old movies, and has a good sense of humor.
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS: Scotty
entertained thousands of children in his role as Sparkle the Clown. His show
ran five days a week over KRCG-TV in Jefferson City, Missouri. Scotty remembers
coming on stage on a skateboard on Christmas, as well as stealing the show from
Santa Claus in the Christmas parade! Some of Scotty's guests included Aunt
Jemima, Rex Allen Sr, and the governor, whose daughter loved Sparkle the Clown.
His outfit, furnished by the station, included a size 18 shoe which he wore
over his street shoes to prevent the huge floppy clown shoes from falling off
his feet!
About once a month, Scotty served as a weekend sports
announcer. Even during hot summer days he looked spiffy on TV in his dress
shirt, tie and long-sleeved jacket--his viewers never suspecting that he was
wearing casual shorts behind the announcer's desk, in an effort to stay cool!
Scotty also wrote commercials, did station breaks, and shot news film. He
remembers getting paid $40 for shooting a gas pipe explosion for Walter
Kronkite.
MILITARY SERVICE: Scotty was in the Air Force during WWII
(known then as the Air Corps, he reminds us), serving as an engineer
gunner, top turret, aboard a B-25. Some of the places he flew to were Puerto
Rico, Brazil and Africa. Scotty tells us that "there is absolutely nothing
more scary at that young age, than flying over water or jungle hour after hour
after hour."
He also flew to Laborador, France, Corsica, and Italy
where he had the opportunity of shaking hands with the Pope . In Corsica, he
recalls rowing out into the beautiful ocean, alive with sea life, and looking
back at the snow white sand. "The water there is the most beautiful blue I
ever saw, " he says.
Scotty didn't tell us much about the bitter parts of the
war, but remembers the thirteen men who left on a mission just one day before
his own flight, never to return.
INTERESTS: Scotty is interested in die cast trucks, tapes,
and media. He also enjoys communicating with other senior citizens through his
computer. If you'd like to read and/or respond to his Senior-to-Senior message
