1. The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy and took
about three years to complete.
2. The lady in the picture is said to be Lisa di Antonio Maria Gherardini, wife
of Francesco del Giocondo, a wealthy Florentine gentleman. Hence the name
"Mona (an Italian contraction of ma donna, my lady) Lisa."
3. The painting has also been known as La Gioconda, which may have been
derived from her married surname or from the Italian word gioconda which
means "a light-hearted woman." |
